Deliverance Story

In one famous story that may be found on the shelves of Adventure, the wizard Skeletus named one of his creations and watched impassively as the dreadful creature flew away from his high tower to wield untold terror and destruction upon some hapless unsuspecting people.

Igniculus (furious fire), an evil voracious beast, alighted upon the ruins of an old castle crowning a verdant mound. The dragon soon put all around it to flame, spreading a black pool of desolation about the once fertile land.

In a desperate bid to appease the monster the good fathers of the nearest city offered up their daughters for sacrifice. Having been made in the classic vein, Igniculus accepted this traditional bargain in exchange for its abstinence and hungrily awaited the first maiden. The years passed, and the once proud city, prosperous and busy, grew dark and despairing under the weight of its shame.

Whereas before the dragon the people had known contentment and plenty now they only knew fear. No one dared to defy the offering or challenge the dragon and soon the people who dwelled beneath the blackened mound became known as the city of the damned. The shameful past was eventually broken by a knight errant called Othrim who foolishly fell in love with one of the cities doomed maidens.

When she, Elana, was selected as that season's victim her bold lover made to her a vow that she would not take the same path as her sisters in death. Othrim secretly followed the solemn procession and when Elana had been chained to the sacrificial oak, and her escort had swiftly departed, the knight stole in to the evil place and broke his lover's bonds. They might have made good their escape without hindrance had not their antics been observed by the keen eyes of the dragon. Igniculus rudely interrupted Elana's deliverance and offered terrible battle to the brave Othrim.
